About the Event
History of Guys Cliffe
Guys Cliffe Mansion has been around since Saxon Times and derives its name from the Guy of Warwick.
Henry VIII founded the dissolution of the monastries and then it was passed onto private hands.
The house itself dates back from 1751 and was founded by Samuel Greafleed a member of parliment for Coventry between the dates 1747-1761.
The chapel of Mary Magdalene has been used by the freemasons since 1955 and is still used by ceremonies to this date,
The chantry was established in 1423 and the chapel of St Mary Magdelene, the storehouse and the stables still remain.
During World War ! the house was used as a hospital and in World War II it became a school for evacuated children.
In 1947 Guys Cliffe Estate was broken up and sold then in 1952 the mill became a pub and resteraunt and was named The Saxon Mill.
The stables also became a riding school, the kitchen a garden nursery and these parts all still exsist today.
There was also a Toll Houseto the north of the Saxon Mill which stood by the road which demolished into the mid 20th Century.
In 1955 the house was purchased by Aldwyn Porter and the chapel leased to the freemasons. By 1966 the roof had fallen in and then in 1992 during the filming of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes a fire scence got out of control and seriously damaged the building.
