About the Event

Are you ready to join the Beyond This World team as we set off to investigate this infamous prison in the heart of Birmingham.

History of the prison

This grade II listed building opened in1891 and operated until 2016. It was once the most feared place in Birmingham Slums.

Prisoners would generally spend less than 24 hours before being sent to court, but there are a number of prisoners who would of spent short sentances there.

There is originally around 70 cells spread over 3 floors. There is a basement which contains the original kitchen with evidence of the old dumb waiter which would of transported food to the upper floors.

The building features a tunnel which thousands of criminals would have took the walk to the nearby courts.

The lighting in the building was natural, from a glass top roof and a single window on each floor.

Today there is evidence still of the Victorian lanterns that would of been used in small enclosures next to each cell door.

The top floor was used for prisoner photography and it is here that the famous "PEAKY BLINDER" mugshots were taken.

The cells get smaller as the building goes on and apparantly these cells were used to house female prisoners.

To this day the building is still owned by West Midlands Police museum.

Life in the Victorian period was known to be difficul, but being housed within these walls with inmates known for their viciousness and contending with the harsh conditions including the formidable guards, makes this location steeped in history.

Paranormal history

Dare you walk into this fearsome Victorian prison?

There are many reports of an assertive femalespirit who haunts the ground floor area of the jail. she is reported as being very dominating and a ring leader. Several spirits have been heard rattaling on metal only for it to stop when people go near to the sound.

Reports of shadows of  former guards and inmates have been  made along with the sounds of screams and cries in the dead of night.

A confused spirit known as Ken has been reported with his communication reported as being strong. Its as if hes still in the cells with people. Cell doors have been heard slamming and disembodoed voices heard chattering when walking along the open landing areas.
