About the Event
Moot Hall History
Moot Hall is a beautiful medieval building set on the tranquil village green of Elstow, Bedfordshire near to the Abbey Church.
Originally built to serve Elstow Abbey as a market house.
Moot Hall features beautiful period furniture and exhibits illustrating the life and traditions of the 17th Century England.
This 600 year old picturesque 15th century building of timber and brick now houses a museum with a life and career of John Bunyan.
Moot Hall was originally called Green house and was built by the nuns of Elstow Abbey as a storage building for stalls associated with the annual Elstow Fair.
For a time in the 19th Century the hall was usd as a schoolroom and a chapel before being restored for the 1951 festival of Britain.
Today the interior has an extensive collections on the life and times of John Bunyan, including two doors from Bedford Gaol, where Bunyan was housed as a prisoner. Also the ancient pulpit from the nearby Abbey where he was worshipped.
There is a wealth of material including furniture and household objects. One of the most interesting objects is that of a saxon cross shaft discovered set in the walls of Abbey church.
This 600 year old building has a well deserved reputation for unexplained happenings, so it attracts paranormal investigators from all over the world.
From disembodied voices heard coming from the kitchen to poltegiest activity from the cheeky mischievous school boy with the tugging of clothes and turning of door handles.
There are reports of a woman dressed in period clothing that wanders around the hall and there has been sightings of her peering from the windows when the building is all locked up and nobody else inside.
